I received a series of email messages a few weeks ago that caught my attention. The titles of the messages referred to "deadly website mistakes" I could be making. I wondered what could be deadly about anything I do with my website unless of course I somehow hooked into some missile launching system or something with my wild technical attempts. While I can get a little wild with my technical attempts, I really don't see that as a possibility.
Obviously the person who was sending me these messages probably thinks they have to tap into my fears to be able to sell to me. Although I mention this example, we see marketing like this every day online and when we stand in line at the grocery store and read the magazine covers. When you study marketing, you will see that conventional wisdom is that most people buy because of emotions and that in order to get people to buy from you today, you have to tap into that. Of course that seems at cross purpose with another traditional marketing axiom that people buy from people, they know, like and trust. Trust and manipulation don't go together.
Someone might make a quick sale by using some of these techniques, but most of us are interested in having someone become a regular customer who buys from us again and again. That gets us back to building a relationship of trust and respect with customers. And it's also about valuing ourselves and our services and products. As entrepreneurs and self employed professionals, we not only create our brand, we are our brand.
